DEMOCRACY FALUN GONG TIBET
The Birth of Venus (La Naissance de Vénus) is one of the most famous paintings by 19th century painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau. It depicts not the actual birth of Venus from the sea, but her transportation in a shell, as a fully mature woman, from the sea to Paphos in Cyprus. For Bouguereau, it was truly a tour de force. The canvas stands at just over 9’10” (3m) high, and 7’2” (2.2m) wide. The subject matter, as well as the composition, resembles the rather more famous rendition of this subject, Sandro Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, as well as Raphael’s painting, The Triumph of Galatea. The painting is in the permanent collection of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.

Sophie Dahl is set to present her own cookery show on BBC Two, made by Fresh One Productions, the company owned by television chef Jamie Oliver. The six-episode series will feature recipes from the supermodel’s recently released cookbook, Miss Dahl’s Voluptuous Delights, as well as featuring “personal food memories” from her childhood.
“Cooking often serves as an emotional barometer, and with this show we will run the gamut - from a solo dinner that suits melancholy to a homecoming feast for 20,” Dahl told theTelegraph. “It’s cooking with an anecdotal thread - irreverent, unpredictable and not without flaw.”
The supermodel, once known for her famous curves, is the granddaughter of children’s author Roald Dahl - and the series will see her revisit “treasured and nostalgic” places which relate to her recipes.
“We are delighted to be bringing Sophie’s culinary talents to the channel,” BBC Two’s controller Janice Hadlow said. “Not only are her recipes fantastic, she’s honest, funny and warm. She’ll be in great company alongside our other homecooking heroines, Delia and Nigella.”
